Accelerated BSN Programs Explained

The growing need for nurses in the health care industry explains why Accelerated BSN programs are created. To produce the number of nurses in a faster rate is to send them to nursing schools through this training.

Only qualified individuals are accepted in the program. An RN with or without a bachelor’s degree in another area of study, or someone who has completed a bachelor’s degree and plans to earn a Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) degree can be a good candidate for the program.

Accelerated BSN programs vary from school to school. A Nursing school accepts a certain criteria for an individual to be accepted in the program. A student should have a GPA of 3.0 and above. The program lasts for about 12 to 18 months and only those committed to the profession of nursing are accepted.

A student with a bachelor’s degree is not required to take the liberal arts included in the 4 year BSN degree. Prior to the start of the program pre-requisites courses are offered (such as anatomy & physiology, microbiology, psychology and chemistry) for students who do not meet natural sciences requirements. Some schools review college transcripts to assure that a student met all pre-requisites.

To better screen qualified students, some colleges and universities included an interview in the admission process. The program requires a hard-working, competitive and a self-motivated student in order to succeed in the course. Lectures are intense and given with no breaks. That is because the four year BSN degree is condensed into 16-18 months. The number of clinical hours a student receives is the same as those in a traditional program. Only a student with definite goals and demonstrate good study habits succeed in the accelerated program.

The cost of the program can reach up to $30,000. A student can fund their education through student loans, grants and scholarships which are offered to qualified students. Also, a student may seek employment in a nursing home, a hospital or a medical related company and work for a period of time in exchange for tuition reimbursement according to their contract.

Graduates from the program are intelligent, skilled clinicians and hard working leaders. The experiences they had from different bachelor degree bring new ideas of giving patient care. Although the program is shorter nothing is sacrifices and it produces the same high standard of nursing professionals.

A much wider selection of job opportunity is opened to nursing graduates. They may include a head nurse, a chief nurse, a researcher and a leader and can earn up to $90,000 annually.
