What is the NCLEX?

Many people ask the question “what is the NCLEX?” and this article will give an answer, plus a great deal of further information that can be applied and used. The NCLEX stands for the National Council Licensure Examination for a Nursing License. All registered nurses and practical nurses have to obtain a nursing license in order to earn their titles.

It is a requirement that a nurse obtains a license in order to practice in the profession. As was previously stated, the exam that they need to pass is called the National Council Licensure Examination or NCLEX. Each registered nurse and practical nurse in the United States must take this test and pass. There are in fact two types of NCLEX. There are NCLEX-RN exams for candidates who are testing for a license to practice as a registered nurse. There is also the NCLEX-PN, which is taken by candidates to receive a practical nurse license.

In order to take the exam, you need to contact the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), with a number of items. For example, you will need to have the payment for your registration fee, the submission of official transcript, and fingerprint scans. You will also need to meet certain academic requirements to be eligible to take the NCLEX. You can meet these specified requirements by completing the coursework dictated by your school. Once you have the nursing license, you also need to pass a licensing test in order to demonstrate your proficiency.

The most credible nursing schools will not allow their students to graduate without them clearly demonstrating the needed knowledge, skills and nursing abilities to work safely, and effectively in the nursing professional. There are many student nurses who get very worried in the days and weeks leading up their exam, but this should not be an issue for a conscientious student who has absorbed and applied the knowledge throughout the course.

There are certain questions in the exam that focus on memorization, but there are also many that focus and test comprehension. As long as you have the foundation of knowledge then you should be prepared for the exam. There are also many ways that students can prepare for these exams, such as with review books, audio programs and companies that are dedicated to this subject matter.

The NCLEX-RN is a computerized test that comprised of 265 questions. There is however a time limit of six hours and the test ends whenever the student is able to show that they have enough knowledge, skill and application to pass. Students should note that the minimum number of questions is 75, and a student can pass when they reach that number of questions, based on the computer adaptive testing (CAT) standard.

Remember that registered nurses and practical nurses need to pass the NCLEX to receive a nursing license. You need to attend a college or university that is accredited so that you can take the NCLEX.
