Nursing Schools in Alabama

In the Yellowhammer State, an aspiring nurse would have many nursing schools in Alabama to choose from. While Alabama was once primarily an agricultural state, it has now expanded its industries to include aerospace, automobile manufacturing, steel production and fabrication, and others. Because of its growing economy, Alabama’s population is also fast rising, from less than 4 million in the 1980s to over 4.7 million in the 2009 census.

Such growth in population would also call for greater demand in the health care industry, and this is where the opportunities for new nurses abound. Employment statistics from the Alabama state government shows that job openings for registered nurses are by far the highest than for any other profession or industry. It is projected that about 1,820 new nursing jobs will be available within the period 2006 to 2016.

At present, there are more than 40 nursing schools in Alabama to serve the need for more nurses. Most of these colleges and universities are located within the state’s major metropolitan areas Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, and Huntsville, offering degrees in practical nursing (LPN/LVN), ADN degree, BSN degree, MSN degree, and online nursing programs for LPN to ADN, RN to BSN, and Second Degree BSN.

One of the biggest and the most technologically advanced of Alabama’s nursing schools is the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), which is known for the headway it has made in bio-technology and medical research. In fact, the UAB Hospital is the only Level 1 trauma center in the state and is its largest employer with about 20,000 staff and health care workers. Information on the state’s accredited schools and licensure requirements can be obtained from the Alabama State Board of Nursing.
