Nursing Schools in Connecticut

Among the many nursing schools in Connecticut are two of the country’s finest – the Yale School of Nursing and the University of Connecticut School of Nursing. The Nutmeg State is also home to two nurse anesthesia programs and an old school nursing degree, the diploma program, which is still being offered in Bridgeport Hospital’s School of Nursing.

Despite the presence of reputable nursing institutions in the state however, Connecticut still isn’t producing nurses fast enough to serve the state’s health care needs. In fact, many of these schools have to turn down thousands of nursing applicants year after year. One reason for such shortage is the lack of qualified nursing faculty in these schools to man the programs and actually do the teaching. It also goes without saying that registered nurses are in high demand here. It is estimated that Connecticut could use some 11,000 to 14,000 additional nurses per year until 2012. That number could even double by the year 2020.

This could only mean one thing: nursing professionals are assured of excellent career prospects for the next years to come. Opportunities abound not only in the state’s biggest employers such as Yale-New Haven Hospital, Danbury Hospital, and Hartford Hospital, but also in private care, home health, and community settings. One great benefit of working in Connecticut as a nurse is that RNs here earn a higher average salary compared to many states. Plus, you get to have a taste of both worlds with the proximity of New England’s scenic countryside and the ultimate city life in New York. Graduates of nursing schools in Connecticut can obtain state licensure from the Board of Examiners for Nursing under the state’s Department of Public Health.
