Nursing Schools in Delaware
With so few nursing schools in Delaware, it’s no surprise that the shortage of nurses is more pronounced here than in most other areas of the country. Even for such a small state with a population of about 800,000, the 10,000 or so nursing professionals currently employed are just not enough to meet the growing health care needs of its residents.
One of the main reasons for this crisis is the lack of qualified nursing faculty, and the fact that there are only about 10 nursing schools in Delaware including state and private colleges. Applicants who are perennially on the waiting lists of campus-based nursing schools however, may opt to enroll in online nursing programs which accept students from all over the country. On the upside, the long wait towards earning a nursing degree will be worth it upon graduation and licensure as finding gainful employment as an RN will be a breeze.
Hospitals offer the most number of job opportunities for nurses in Delaware, although openings in private care facilities and nursing homes are growing too. Aside from offering good wages, many employers are offering additional benefits such as flexible work schedules, higher overtime and differential pay, and tuition reimbursement to lure in nurses. Some of the state’s biggest employers are the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children and the BayHealth Medical Center. The Delaware Board of Nursing regulates the licensure requirements of nursing graduates, while the Delaware Nurses Association serves as an invaluable resource for registered nurses on matters of job opportunities, career growth, and higher nursing education.
