Nursing Schools in Illinois
With well over a hundred nursing schools in Illinois situated in different parts of the state, an aspiring nurse should have a lot of options on where he or she can earn that nursing degree. And there’s really no better time to start a nursing career than now when the demand for nurses is sky-high in most US states.
In Illinois in particular, the unemployment rate is higher than the national average but job opportunities for about 8,000 new nurses are projected to open up every year. Being the 3rd most populous city in the country with almost 3 million residents, the most competitive nursing jobs are within the state’s capital, Chicago and surrounding areas. But the shortage doesn’t just affect big hospitals in the major metropolitan areas but also in the rural communities where the problem becomes both attracting new nurses and retaining them. Nursing professionals in Chicago enjoy higher wages, but on the other hand, the cost of living is a lot lower in the smaller cities and towns.
For nurses who choose to settle and work in the Prairie State (named after Illinois’ vast farmlands), opportunities for career advancement also abound. The majority of the nursing schools in Illinois offer a whole range of more advanced nursing degrees such as Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) to prepare RNs for administrative functions and advanced training in specialty areas. But even with just the basic nursing diploma, associate’s degree (ASN), or bachelor’s degree (BSN) earned from Illinois nursing schools or online programs, nurses will not be in want of jobs here in the next few years. Licensing of nursing graduates practicing in this state will be subject to the rules and requirements of the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.
