Nursing Schools in Iowa

There are more than 30 nursing schools in Iowa and any one of them can help you get started on a promising career. So why choose nursing as a profession in the Hawkeye State? Well for one, it’s no secret that nurses are needed practically everywhere. But in the state of Iowa specifically, the cost of living is low so the better-than-average nursing pay goes a long way.

Iowa also boasts a low unemployment rate and a very low level of crime – clear indications that this Midwestern state is thriving and is a great place to settle in. Most jobs and opportunities for career advancement are concentrated in Iowa’s largest cities such as Davenport, Sioux City, Cedar Rapids, and the state’s capital, Des Moines.

Over the next few years, job opportunities for new nurses will continue to open up as more nurses retire. At present, more than 60% of registered nurses in Iowa are well within the retirement age, including those who are in the teaching field. This means that nurses will be in high demand not only in hospitals and patient care facilities, but also in Iowa nursing schools and in public health settings.

The lack of qualified nurse educators, however, also means that admission into nursing schools in Iowa will likely become more competitive, and slots for nursing programs will be harder to come by. In this case, an aspiring student nurse could also look into online programs offered for individuals across the country who are having a tough time getting into brick-and-mortar nursing schools. Many Iowans are already taking this route to fast track their way to a degree in nursing. And with that degree in hand, it’s only a matter of applying for becoming a registered nurse (RN) through the Iowa Board of Nursing.
