Nursing Schools in Maine

Breathtaking sceneries of jagged, rocky coastlines and seafood galore are not all the Pine Tree State has to offer. You can also find more than a dozen nursing schools in Maine which can give the right training and skills to those who are after a solid nursing education.

And indeed, there are more than a few good reasons to start a nursing career in Maine. For one, RNs in Maine receive higher pay than their counterparts in many other US states. While the rates also depend on one’s specialization and experience, the annual mean wage is about $65,000 – which is well over the national average.

Plus, the nursing shortage is also greatly felt in this state and this means hiring of nurses continue even as other industries struggle with the continued recession. It is estimated that by the year 2020, there will be more than 5,000 vacancies for nurses. To augment the current demand, RNs from out-of-state are being lured with attractive benefits such as sign-on bonuses, living expenses, travel allowance, and more.

Big hospitals, especially in Maine’s major cities – Portland, Bangor, Lewiston, and Augusta, are Maine’s largest employers of nurses but RNs are also needed in doctors’ offices, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, and private care facilities. In addition, nursing schools in Maine are also experiencing shortage of competent nursing faculty. This is the reason why so many student applicants are being turned away every year, thereby, limiting the number of graduates as well. Online nursing programs, provided they are accredited by the Maine State Board of Nursing, offer an alternative route to earning a basic nursing degree (ADN, BSN) or a graduate level degree (MSN, DNP).
