Nursing Schools in Michigan
Michigan is home not only to four of the five great lakes and over 60,000 inland lakes, but also to more than 55 nursing schools in Michigan and countless opportunities for nurses. While the continued recession has sent the state’s unemployment rate soaring, the nursing industry has remained seemingly immune to the struggles in the job market.
Health care practitioners, including over 84,000 registered nurses, have remained gainfully employed. In fact, as a huge chunk of the state’s population of 9 million ages in the next 10 to 15 years, more work opportunities are expected to open up for RNs. It is estimated that as many as 18,000 more nurses will be needed by 2015.
Most nursing jobs are found in the state’s 115 hospitals, although nurses can also easily find good employment in nursing homes, doctors’ clinics, outpatient and long term care facilities, and nursing schools in Michigan. Staff nurses in the Detroit metro area earn the highest (around $59,000 and $72,000), followed by those working in the Grand Rapids area (around $56,000 to $69,000).
The Great Lakes State of Michigan is the only state in the US to be composed of two peninsulas. The majority of the population reside in the lower peninsula and it is also where most nursing schools in Michigan are located. These schools offer the whole range of nursing degrees including LPN/LVN degrees, the 2-year associate degree, 4-year bachelor degree, and post-baccalaureate degrees and certifications.
Online nursing programs are also available for those applicants who can no longer be accommodated in campus-based programs. For newly graduated nurses and those interested to relocate and pursue their nursing career here, state licensure requirements are overseen by the Michigan Board of Nursing.
