Nursing Schools in Mississippi

Nursing schools in Mississippi every year are getting more nursing applications than they can accommodate. This is because more Mississippians have come to realize the many benefits that being a nurse in the Magnolia State can bring.

For one, Mississippi holds one of the lowest cost of living rates in the entire country – 10 percent below the national average. What this essentially means for the nursing professional is that his or her paycheck will go a longer way here than in any of the other states. In addition, this state is also in the midst of a dire nursing shortage which opens a lot of doors for both experienced nurses and those just starting out in the industry.

As of 2008, the vacancy rate for nursing jobs in Mississippi’s hospitals was at 6.8 percent, while more job opportunities await nurses in nursing homes, clinics, private care institutions, and long term care facilities. However, the total demand for registered nurses is foreseen to reach up to 30 percent by 2012.

Starting a nursing career here doesn’t just mean getting into any one of the 23 (or so) Mississippi nursing schools or working in any of its 73 hospitals plus other health care facilities. Settling and practicing in this state as an RN also means experiencing first hand the charm of the old south and the friendliness of the residents. After all, Mississippi is not known to many as The Hospitality State for nothing.

At present, the state’s biggest employers of nurses include the Baptist Memorial Hospital, the Forrest General Health System, St. Dominic’s Hospital, and the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Still, more nurses are needed and anyone looking to explore the possibilities of practicing as a nursing professional here should first comply with the licensing requirements set by the Mississippi Board of Nursing.
