Nursing Schools in Nebraska
The Cornhusker State may be associated with sprawling plains, ranching, and Kool-Aid (yes, the sugary summer drink traces its roots to this state) but that doesn’t mean aspiring nurses can’t start a rewarding career here especially with over 20 nursing schools in Nebraska.
Nebraska is the perfect place for anyone wanting to practice nursing in a more rural health care setting. And with a population of about 1.8 million spread out across a total land area of 77,354 sq miles, nurses are very much in demand here. In fact, the state government created the Nebraska Center for Nursing in 2000 to address the lack of RNs in the state, focusing both on the recruitment as well as retention of nurses.
It is estimated that by 2012, job vacancies for nurses will have risen to 25 percent more. The best career opportunities for nurses are in Nebraska’s 24 hospitals, most of which are located within the major metro areas. While openings for staff nurses are always available, the state is more in need of advanced practice nurses such as nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners.
In the same way, nursing schools in Nebraska are also found in the most populated cities – Lincoln and Omaha – but the good news for those who reside far from these areas is that distance learning or online programs are available for them.
Salary-wise, a nursing career in Nebraska pays quite well too, although there’s a marked difference between the earnings of a registered nurse in an urban working environment and one in a rural setting. For instance, staff nurses practicing in Lincoln and Omaha can earn between $50,000 to $63,000, while one in North Platte can have a salary range of $37,000 to $45,000. Graduates of Nebraska nursing schools and RNs planning to work here should first get information from the Nebraska Board of Nursing website on state licensure requirements.
