Nursing Schools in New Hampshire

If you’re a Granite Stater just starting out on your nursing career or looking to earn higher degrees, you’ll find over a dozen nursing schools in New Hampshire to choose from. As with most other areas in the country today, the Granite State, known for its rich American culture and skiing and hiking destinations, is experiencing a critical shortage of registered nurses.

New Hampshire currently has a total nurse work force of about 13,000, but with the average age of nurses here at 48, it won’t be long before many go into retirement, leaving an even more pronounced lack of RNs. Plus, qualified nursing faculty, responsible for the education and training of new nurses, are also in short supply.

But while the situation doesn’t sound promising at all for the state, this is good news for those in the nursing industry or planning to enter it. A registered nurse here has the potential to earn an annual mean wage of about $62,000, and because New Hampshire is one of the few states that has no general sales tax and personal income tax, that income is bound to stretch longer.

To qualify for licensure as a nurse, one must first complete either a nursing diploma, a 2-year associate’s degree (ADN), or a 4-year bachelor’s degree (BSN) from any of the nursing schools in New Hampshire. Nursing graduates must then successfully pass the NCLEX-RN exam to become a registered nurse. The state’s 14 small to mid-sized hospitals, the largest of which is the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, are the biggest employers of nurses. But there are also ample nursing jobs outside of hospitals such as those in nursing homes, clinics, and private care facilities. In addition, a nurse licensed in New Hampshire can even look beyond the state’s borders for employment opportunities since the state is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NCL). This is an agreement between 22 states that allows for registered nurses who obtained licensure in any of these states to practice nursing legally in the other member states.
