Nursing Schools in Oregon
The lush forests, rugged coastline and snow-capped mountains of Oregon beckon visitors and would-be residents alike. This state in the Pacific Northwest offers a very good quality of life with its “green” cities and strong economy.
Indeed, many nurses have chosen to study and live here because the nursing schools in Oregon and nursing wages are some of the best in the nation. Living amidst all the greenery and encountering progressive subcultures certainly do not hurt either. Although agriculture and the wine industries are the largest sectors, health care is also an important component.
About 30,000 nurses work in Oregon. They are mostly found in and around Portland and Salem, where nursing positions pay the most. Hospitals in these cities are regularly included in the list of best hospitals in the United States. Among them are the Oregon Health Science University Hospital, Salem Hospital and the Providence Portland Medical Center.
Students can choose from over 30 nursing schools in Oregon. Community and private colleges, hospitals, and private and public universities offer practical nursing, associate, baccalaureate, masters and doctorate degrees. For incumbent nurses wishing to upgrade their LPN or ADN degrees, there are RN bridging programs available. The Oregon Health Science University offers a nurse practitioner program.
The OHSU is the largest public university system in Oregon and its nursing program is being offered in many campuses across the state. The private University of Portland School of Nursing is an excellent alternative for the brightest students who are willing to undergo the rigorous admission process.
Students are certainly not limited to the top-tier schools. They can always choose to apply to other accredited nursing schools. Scholarships such as the Oregon Nursing Services Program and Oregon Opportunity Grants will help qualified students offset some of the cost of their nursing education. Students can also participate in the N2K Nursing Education Program where hospitals pay for tuition in exchange for a pre-determined work commitment by students after they graduate.
Prospective nursing students should not be discouraged by the schools’ high admission denial rates. Schools are ramping up their student capacities each year to keep up with present and future nursing demand. Half of Oregon’s nurses will retire by 2020 and approximately 15,700 additional nurses will be needed by then. The Oregon Center of Nursing says that the state’s health care industry will expand 30 percent by 2020, exacerbating the shortage.
Nursing graduates in Oregon will not run short of work opportunities as hospitals look for qualified personnel to replace retiring nurses and to care for the aging population. With its idyllic setting and relatively high-paying nursing jobs, it is not a wonder why many nurses outside Oregon move to the state and nursing graduates here choose to stay and practice.
