Nursing Schools in South Carolina
The “Palmetto State” attracts many vacationers and retirees because of its mild winters, mountains, beaches, and its trademark Southern hospitality. Tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and healthcare are the major sectors in this state. The economic downturn has adversely affected employment here, but qualified nurses have enough positions to vie for in towns and the state’s largest cities such as Columbia and Charleston.
More than 38,000 nurses work in the state, half of which are graduates of nursing schools in South Carolina. They practice in a variety of settings, caring for a relatively diverse patient population with Whites, African-Americans and Hispanics being the largest groups. Foreign-born residents are expected to increase further in the coming years.
The state’s 30+ South Carolina nursing schools have traditionally not produced enough nurses to fill most of the nursing positions in the state. Some of the more established programs are Medical University of South Carolina, University of South Carolina and Clemson University. Programs offered are LPN, ADN and BSN programs. Three schools offer masters programs and two offer doctorate nursing degrees.
Just like in any other state, nursing schools in South Carolina have waiting lists due to the lack of qualified nursing instructors. But many applicants from out of state have come to South Carolina because of the shorter waiting times. Schools have been striving to create distance-learning and online educational programs for the convenience of new students and working nurses who wish to upgrade their degrees without having to leave their working positions.
Hospitals, schools and state health officials have created the South Carolina Nursing Collaborative program in order to share resources, offer scholarships, and double the capacities of nursing programs to produce more nurses. This development is a boon to nursing students and they must take advantage of the system in place to further their nursing education.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, South Carolina will need 12,000 nurses by 2020. The current and future need will be felt most in medical-surgical, emergency and intensive care units. Advanced practice nurses (APNs) and geriatric care nurses will also be in high demand. Students can choose to specialize in these areas to have the best opportunities when they graduate.
