Nursing Schools in Utah

Utah has more than 17,000 nurses serving a highly-urbanized population of nearly 3 million people living mostly in and around Salt Lake City. The state has a major tourism industry with national parks, hiking trails, and ski resorts as major attractions.

Utah’s health care sector is also an important part of many communities. It employs more than 41,000 workers including 17,000 nurses working in ten health systems. Hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and home health agencies are the settings where nurses can be found. According to the United Health Group, Utah is the second-healthiest state in 2009, with low rates of cancer and smoking. Surely, the work of nurses in patient education and care is a major reason for this distinction.

Utah nurses are getting older but many have delayed retirement because of the poor economic conditions at the present. When they finally retire, graduates from the nursing schools in Utah are more than ready to fill their positions. These nursing schools are all accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Three nursing schools are ranked nationally by U.S. News and World Report in their last survey in 2007: University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and Westminster College. The University of Utah is ranked 25th by the NIH in 2009 in terms of funding. Student admissions are competitive and some nursing programs accept new students only once per year.

The requirements are minimum GPA scores, prerequisite courses, and admission essays to name a few. A basic life support (BLS) certificate, immunization, laboratory tests, and physical examination are likewise required either prior to or immediately after being admitted. Utah nursing schools offer typical nursing programs such as LPN, LVN, ADN, traditional BSN, accelerated BSN, RN to MSN, and MSN. PhD and DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) programs are offered only by the University of Utah.

Among online schools, the University of Phoenix has a campus in Salt Lake City to cater to students. Some of these schools allow web-based student applications. They also extend financial assistance, scholarships, grants, and student loans to deserving students.

Although Utah may not have plenty of openings for nursing graduates and jobs are getting scarce for graduates, many working nurses will eventually retire and must be replaced by younger nurses. Enrolling in any of Utah’s nursing schools is a step in the right direction for nurses willing to hone their skills before assuming the full responsibility as nurses in the years ahead.
