Nursing Schools in New Mexico
New Mexico conjures up images of barren landscapes, secret military facilities and mysterious lights – certainly not nursing schools in New Mexico. But really, “The Land of Enchantment” offers much more than what its public image conveys. This state has a unique blend of Native American, Hispanic and American Southwestern culture unlike any other state can offer.
It is reflected in the warm, colorful, and exciting nature of its cuisine, music, and language. This quality carries over to the kind of nursing care rendered by its more than 12,000 nurses whose contributions here are mostly valued. New Mexico’s health care industry is the third-largest in the state in terms of wages and employment. It has a significant impact in all communities from the rural pueblos to urban areas like Albuquerque.
Available nursing programs confer practical nurse, career ladder, associate, baccalaureate and masters degrees. They are offered by over 20 nursing schools in New Mexico with traditional and online learning options to choose from. Lately, big universities such as the University of New Mexico have launched their doctorate in nursing programs. Second-degree, RN to BSN, and dual degree nursing programs are also some of the recent additions.
Since many programs are just starting, applicants need to verify with the appropriate agencies if these schools are accredited. Applicants may also contend with waiting lists just like the situation in other states. The important thing for applicants to do is to complete requirements and consider all types of programs. One may need to start with practical nursing courses and enroll in ladder programs to upgrade later. Students can qualify for financial incentives and tuition assistance from nursing schools. For those who can maintain a “B” average or a GPA of 3.0, the Center for New Mexico Nursing Excellence can provide the Nightingale Nursing Scholarship.
New Mexico nursing school programs produce more than 500 graduates every year. But this graduation rate is not enough to keep staffing ratios in hospitals and other facilities to deliver quality outcomes. By 2020, New Mexico will experience a nursing shortfall of 57 percent , which is higher than the national average.
Nursing schools in New Mexico must double their graduation rates in order to meet the demand. Students can benefit from the future expansion of these nursing programs because more slots will be available. When they graduate, they can take advantage of the Nurse Licensure Compact which allows New Mexico-licensed nurses to work in neighboring states. This gives them flexibility in deciding where they want to work. They can always come back to New Mexico where life is laid back and devoid of the breakneck pace that is all-too-common in other parts of the U.S.
